Immerse yourself in the powerful story of New Zealand's beginnings on a multi-sensory journey into Te Ao Maori, the Maori world. Manea - Footprints of Kupe offers visitors a unique cultural encounter of guided storytelling through art, taonga (cultural treasures), film, performance, digital interaction and the splendour of Hokianga’s natural surroundings.

Be warmly welcomed to Manea with a timeless powhiri (traditional welcoming ceremony) before engaging with your expert local guide as they weave an interactive guided tour through the cultural centre's grounds led by Kupe’s descendants. Kupe was a legendary Polynesian explorer, navigator and Chief and was said to be the first Polynesian to discover the islands of New Zealand.

Hear stories of Maori ancestors and the ancient realms of Kupe told through carvings and the surrounding land. Deepen your understanding of Maori customs and their dynamic connections to the natural and spiritual world. Enjoy a 20-minute 4D-digital extravaganza and live performance immersing you in a sensory recreation of the rich and vibrant world of the intrepid adventures of Kupe.

From the theatre, your guide will lead you outside to absorb the full significance of the Hokianga Harbour and New Zealand's story. This was not only where Kupe made his home, but also his final departure point from this land. Continue your journey of discovery at your leisure in the interactive gallery, where digital stations reveal more details of our ancestor’s stories.

Manea Footprints of Kupe

So powerful it brought tears to my eyes and made me proud to belong to this country with its fantastic history of leading the world in deep-ocean navigation. Kupe was blasting around the Oceanside of the planet wen our European ancestors were still afraid to lose sight of land. Unforgettable. As a retired teacher I say that every Kiwi child deserves to see this presentation as an essential part of their education. It will give them pride in the ancient human history and the indigenous culture of their nation.

This is a Must-Do Experience

I had a great time here. The program was captivating. It was very hot outside. The guide was excellent.

Great day!!!

Amazing culture. So glad I was able to participate in this tour.

Fantastic experience!

Definitely worth visiting location. We received a lot of facts and information about their family and culture from our excellent guide, who was also happy to answer any questions.

Too much fun!

It's interesting to see that there is still a Maori village. The cultural performance was excellent, and your tour guide gave a very good explanation of how the Maori live.
